Kłamała, zabijała i szpiegowała dla kogoś, kto zamiast jej wybawcą, okazał się kolejnym kłamstwem w jej życiu. Aila straciła wszystko, co było jej dotąd znane; bezpieczeństwo pałacu, przyjaciela i przeszłość, którą wydawało jej się, że znała. Od młodości wmawiano jej, że jej moc musi być trzymana w tajemnicy; nikt nie pokochałby potwora, który włada ciemnością. Zamiast tego stała się zdolnym szpiegiem. Aila jest silną bohaterką, która dorastała w świecie zdominowanym przez mężczyzn, co uczyniło ją zarówno inteligentną, ale również łatwą do zmanipulowania, przez to, że nigdy nie doświadczyła prawdziwej miłości, a jej definicja troski jest płynna. Wszystkie postacie wzbudziły we mnie sympatię, nawet jeśli nie zawsze zgadzałam się z ich wyborami
Historia nie skupia się tak bardzo na budowaniu świata, ale jest wystarczająco zarysowana, aby dodać do fabuły. W relacjach pomiędzy bohaterami było za mało akcji i dynamiki, jak na mój gust, a zainteresowały mnie wszystkie postacie i miło by było, gdyby autorka bardziej pogłębiła ich osobowości i indywidualne historie, których wzmianki zostawiły we mnie niedosyt, co mam nadzieję stanie się w kolejnym tomie. W całej historii od samego początku brakowało czegoś, co mogłoby mnie wciągnąć, ale to dopiero pierwsza książka z serii, a do tego debiut, więc jest to zrozumiałe.

If you like books that combine magic, beautiful palaces, royal intrigues and trickery, all described with a light pen, “Among shadows” is for you. It’s a journey of self-discovery, a tale of the price of love and power that can change the fate of an entire nation. I have to admit, this is a book with an atmosphere that will surely appeal to “Shadow and bone” fans.
Aila is a strong heroine who grew up in a male-dominated world, which made her both intelligent and cunning, but also easy to manipulate as she has never experienced true love and her definition of care is fluid and unclear. I found all characters easy to understand and like, even when I didn’t always agree with their choices. Honestly, it was so hard to dislike them, even the villains, as they did their job so greatly, being the heroes that this story needed them to be.
I found myself being interested in all of the characters and I wish the author would explore their personalities and individual stories, the mention of which left me wanting more.
The story doesn’t focus that much on world-building, you can easily see that it's just the introduction to the series, but it’s outlined enough to add to the plot and spark some curiosity. The overall story lacked something to pull me in from the very beginning, but it was much more dynamic in the second half. "Among Shadows" is just the first book in the series and debut at that, but I think it did a good job at introducing us to the universe created by the author and I hope for more action and dynamic in relationships in the next book!
